NAVTEX ist Teil des Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Es sendet alle vier Stunden Wetter- und Navigationswarnungen auf Englisch auf 518 kHz von Sendern auf der ganzen Welt. Zunehmend werden auch lokale Sprach- und Kleinschiffsinformationen auf 490kHz übertragen. Dringende Meldungen wie Sturmwarnungen können bei Bedarf auch zwischen den geplanten Übertragungen übertragen werden.
